Reference — wigs and toppers, from first principles
Beginner’s guide to human hair wigs and toppers
Everything you need to know, without the overwhelm. What each piece really is, how to choose the right one for you, how they’re sized and worn, and what to expect from your very first piece.
The Basics
A wig covers your whole head and stays put with an adjustable cap — no glue, no tape. A topper is smaller: it clips into the hair you still have to add coverage and volume where you’ve thinned, usually at the crown and along your part. We make both from 100% Remy human hair and finish every piece by hand — and I promise that within a few days of wearing yours, it stops feeling like a wig and simply becomes your hair.

Looking for your first wig or topper can feel like a lot. There’s a whole new vocabulary, the prices are real, and almost every website seems to either rush you to buy, or fill the page with fake-looking photos and no real information. This guide is the opposite of that. I wrote it to be a simple, honest place you can come back to whenever you need it — to understand how it all works, take your time, and figure out which piece is genuinely right for you.
You can read it start to finish, or just dip in whenever a question comes up. Either way, by the end you’ll know what to look for and what to ask us.
01The words you’ll hear a lot
Most people use the word “wig” to mean just about anything that isn’t their own hair — a wig, a topper, a fringe, a pony. That’s perfectly fine in everyday conversation, but it can get confusing fast when you’re actually trying to choose. So here are the words you’ll hear from us most often, in plain English.
Please don’t feel you need to memorize them. Just skim the list and come back whenever you need to — I promise the moment these words click into place is the moment the whole decision starts to feel easy.
Core terms
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| Wig | A full hair piece that covers the entire scalp, secured by an adjustable cap with combs and silicone grips. |
| Hair topper | A partial piece (sometimes called a hairpiece) clipped onto your existing hair to cover the crown, part, or thinning areas. |
| Lace front | A cap construction with a fine, hand-tied lace at the hairline that disappears into the skin and creates a natural hairline. |
| Hand-tied | Each hair is individually knotted onto the cap by hand, giving the most realistic movement — just like natural hair growing from your scalp. |
| Glueless | A wig cap designed to be worn without glue or adhesives. |
| Pony wig | A wig designed with a slightly snugger cap and structured back so it can be worn in a real, high ponytail. |
| Remy hair | Human hair collected with all cuticles aligned in the same direction. The standard for premium pieces. |
There’s a fuller glossary at the bottom of this page if you ever want it. But if you take just one thing from this section, let it be the difference between a wig and a topper — honestly, almost every conversation about your hair starts right there.
02Wig or topper — how to decide
Here’s the honest truth: both a wig and a topper are wonderful, and each has its own strengths. Plenty of women even wear both, depending on the day and how they’re feeling.
A topper is the smaller, lighter of the two. It clips into the hair you already have to add volume and coverage on top, and it’s lovely and easy to tie up into ponytails and updos. The one thing to know is that you do need enough of your own hair for it to clip onto — and because it blends with your hair, a topper works best in a similar color and length to what you already have.
A wig is the easiest thing in the world. You simply pull it on and go, and it doesn’t matter how much or how little hair you have underneath. And because a wig covers everything, you can change your color and length to anything you’ve ever wanted.
By situation
| Situation | Usually best suited to |
|---|---|
| Hormonal thinning (menopause, thyroid, postpartum, PCOS) | Topper |
| General age-related thinning along the part | Topper |
| Alopecia areata — small, crown-centered patches | Topper |
| Alopecia areata — widespread or moving patches | Wig |
| Frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) | Wig with a hand-tied lace front |
| Chemotherapy or radiation hair loss | Wig with a lightweight cap |
| Trichotillomania — localized | Topper |
| Trichotillomania — broader patterns | Wig (gentle, glueless cap) |
| You want a complete change in length, color, or style | Wig |
| You want more density, the same hair | Topper |
And if you don’t see your situation in the table, just send us a few photos and a couple of sentences. You don’t need a diagnosis or the right words — once we can see your hair, we can almost always point you to the right answer.
For the full side-by-side, see our wig or topper article.
03Cap construction — lace, silk, hand-tied, glueless
If there’s one technical thing worth remembering, it’s this: the cap matters just as much as the hair. The hair is what you see in the mirror — but the cap is what you feel all day long. A good cap disappears within minutes of putting it on. A poor one stays hot, heavy, and obvious until the moment you take it off at night.
It’s also the part that separates a beautiful piece from a cheap one. The hair on a budget wig can look surprisingly good in a photo, but the cap gives it away the moment you wear it. That’s why every Goldylost cap is finished by hand, and built on one of the constructions below.
Goldylost Wig Caps
| Construction | What it does well | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Lace wig | A hand-tied lace front for a hairline that disappears, a hand-tied top for natural movement, and a wefted back for stability and breathability. | Our most popular, easy-to-wear daily wig — suitable for almost everyone. |
| Fully hand-tied wig | The entire cap is hand-tied with no wefts, making it the lightest, most breathable cap we make — with the most styling freedom of all. | Our premium cap; lovely for sensitive scalps, total hair loss, and all-day wear. |
| Pony wig | Built with a different back construction that lets you wear a real, high ponytail. | Tighter fit by design; don’t size down if you’re between sizes. |
Goldylost Topper Caps
| Construction | What it does well | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Lace topper | A hand-tied lace top makes this our lightest, most breathable cap. It gives less hair overall and sits very flat — perfect for thin or fine hairlines. | Lovely for everyday wear and warmer climates. |
| Silk topper | A silk top mimics your scalp at the part so realistically it looks like hair growing from your own head, with a fuller density on top. | A touch more hair and slightly heavier than lace; blends beautifully with the right placement. |
| Grand topper | Our largest topper — a hybrid between a topper and a wig. A full hand-tied lace front gives you a hairline too, so it’s perfect if you have little or no hair at the front, and it parts anywhere and ties up beautifully. | The most coverage of any topper, with more flexibility in length and color. |
Every Goldylost wig is glueless — no glue, no tape, no adhesive. Your piece holds beautifully and comfortably on its own, so you can simply pull it on and get on with your day.
04Hair type — human hair vs synthetic
The biggest choice in the wig world is human hair versus synthetic, and honestly, both have their place. Synthetic wigs hold their style on their own, cost less, and are great for short-term wear, a bit of fun, or a bold color you’d never commit to with your own hair. They can also be a sensible choice during active chemotherapy, when restyling every day just isn’t realistic.
For almost everything else, human hair is what I’d point you to. If you’re going to wear a piece every day for a year or more, human hair lasts longer, breathes better, and lets you use heat tools and toning. It costs more up front, but it usually works out cheaper than replacing two or three synthetic pieces over the same time.
Human hair vs synthetic, at a glance
| Attribute | Human hair | Synthetic |
|---|---|---|
| Realism | Indistinguishable from your own hair | Can look good; harder to fool the eye up close |
| Heat styling | Curl, straighten, blow-dry like your own | Most cannot tolerate heat; some heat-friendly options |
| Color changes | Can be toned, rooted, lowlighted by a specialist | Fixed at manufacture |
| Lifespan with regular wear | 1–3+ years | 4–6 months typically |
| Breathability | Natural fibre, breathable on the scalp | Synthetic fibre, holds heat more |
| Cost | Higher up-front, lower over time | Lower up-front, replaced more often |
Where our hair comes from matters deeply to me. Most wig hair comes from huge factories — thick, strong, and impossible to trace. So instead, I fly to Southern Brazil and hand-choose our fine, soft ponytails myself, from the same region the world knows for supermodels like Gisele Bündchen and Adriana Lima. That rare, fine texture is the heart of what makes a Goldylost piece look and feel like your own hair.
05Length, color, and style
This is the fun part — though it can feel like a lot of decisions at once. The order I’d suggest is the same one we use in consultations: start with length, since it shapes everything; then color, which has to suit the rest of you; and style last, because human hair lets you cut and change it whenever you like.
Length
Each piece is measured from the crown to the tip at the back, and most come with soft layering through the lengths for a natural, lived-in finish. Most women land between 14 inches (just below the shoulder) and 22 inches (mid-back). If you’re unsure, go an inch or two longer than you think — we can always trim it once it arrives, but we can never add length back.
Typical length ranges
| Length | Approximate finish |
|---|---|
| 8–10 in | Pixie to short bob |
| 12–14 in | Chin to collarbone bob |
| 16–18 in | Just below shoulders |
| 20–22 in | Mid-back |
| 24 in | Long, well below mid-back |
Color
With a wig, choose whatever you’ve always wanted to be. With a topper, you’ll want to match your own hair at the root and around the edges so it blends. We can add subtle highlights, shadow roots, dark roots, and a bangs cut too — just ask in your consultation and we’ll talk you through the options and current pricing.
Style
Our standard textures are straight, beach waves, and soft curls — and because every piece is 100% human hair, you can switch between them with heat tools whenever you like, exactly as you would with your own hair. Each piece can also be cut into any style you love, whether that’s soft layers, a fringe, or a blunt bob.
06Cap sizing and topper base sizing
Wig sizing
Measuring your own head sounds fiddly, but I promise it’s simple. All you need is a soft fabric tape measure — the kind used for sewing, not a metal one — and five quiet minutes in front of the mirror.
Three numbers give us your cap size. Circumference is the distance all the way around your head — across your hairline, behind your ears, and around the nape of your neck. Front-to-nape runs over the top of your head, from your front hairline straight down the center to the bottom of your hairline at the back. And ear-to-ear is measured over the crown, from the top of one ear to the other. Circumference is by far the most important; the other two just help us fit women whose heads are a little longer, narrower, or shorter than average.
Standard cap sizes
| Size | Circumference (in) | Circumference (cm) |
|---|---|---|
| XS | 19.5–20.5 | 50–52 |
| S | 20.5–21.5 | 52–54 |
| M | 21.5–22.0 | 54–56 |
| L | 22.0–23.0 | 56–58 |
| XL | 23.0–23.6 | 58–60 |
| XXL | 23.6+ | 60+ |
Full measuring instructions are in our cap sizing article.
Topper base sizing
The lovely thing about toppers is that sizing is universal — you don’t need to measure your head at all. The base simply sits on top of your hair and the clips adjust to you. We make two base sizes:
Topper base sizes
| Topper | Base size |
|---|---|
| Lace & silk toppers | 8" × 8" |
| Grand topper | 10" × 11" |
For smaller thinning areas, our lace or silk topper is perfect. For more significant loss — especially at the front — the larger grand topper gives you more coverage and a full hairline.
If you’re ever between two sizes in a pony wig, please don’t automatically size down. The pony cap is built a little snugger to hold that high ponytail in place, so the smaller size can come up tight. When in doubt, book a quick consultation or order the standard size unaltered — just remember that altered pieces aren’t covered by our return policy.
07Fit, comfort, and security
Almost every woman I meet has the same two worries: that a wig will slip or fall off, and that it’ll feel hot and uncomfortable to wear. So let me put both to rest. Our caps are wonderfully secure — we’ve had women wear theirs on roller coasters and jet boats without giving it a second thought.
They’re also the most comfortable caps on the market: lightweight, breathable, and designed to be worn all day, to the point where you genuinely forget you have it on. And if a piece ever doesn’t feel quite right, it’s almost always a small fit or placement tweak — something we’ll happily help you sort out on the call.
08Care and lifespan
A beautiful human hair wig or topper is an investment — and like anything worth having, it rewards a little care. Looked after well, a Goldylost piece lasts between one and three years of regular wear, and longer again if you rotate between two. It may last a little less if it’s your only wig and worn every day, or used for activities like the gym or swimming.
The routine is simple and quickly becomes second nature: wash it gently every so often, let it air-dry, store it on a stand, and give it a soft brush. And because every piece is real human hair, the color can gently soften over time — so at some stage it may want a refresh or re-tone, which we’re always here to help with.
The care essentials
| Action | How often |
|---|---|
| Brush gently with a wig-safe brush | Before and after wear |
| Wash with sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner | Every 10–20 wears |
| Air-dry on a wig stand | After every wash |
| Store on a stand, away from direct sun | Whenever not in use |
| Professional refresh in our atelier | Every 6 months – 1 year |
The full care reference is in our wash and care article.
09The Goldylost consultation
Honestly, everything gets easier the moment you’re talking to a real person. A consultation is just a relaxed 40 to 60 minute chat with one of our specialists. We’ll talk about your hair as it is today, the look you’d love to feel like yourself in, what you’ve tried before, and what has and hasn’t worked. By the end, we’ve narrowed hundreds of pieces down to the two or three that would genuinely suit you — and the questions that have been keeping you up at night usually have answers.
Every one of our specialists is trained in wigs, and chosen for the same reasons: a real passion for helping women, and genuine empathy and kindness. They’re either wig wearers themselves or qualified hairdressers — so you’re always in caring, knowledgeable hands.
Consultations are available three ways:

10Frequently asked questions
Can I wear a wig every day? Absolutely. Most of our women wear theirs every day. If you can, I’d gently suggest having two in rotation.
Will wearing a wig affect the hair underneath? If anything, the opposite — wearing a wig can actually protect the hair you have, keeping it tucked safely away from heat, styling, and daily wear and tear. And our toppers are designed to be gentle on your hair too, with larger bases and pressure-sensitive clips.
Can I sleep in my wig? You can, but it does shorten its life. If you need to, tie it in a loose braid and sleep on a silk pillowcase.
Can I swim in my wig? Yes, just with a little care. Salt water and chlorine are tough on hair, so rinse, condition, and air-dry it as soon as you can afterward.
Can I dye my wig? Sometimes. Toning and going a little darker are usually fine, but we don’t recommend lifting the color lighter, except on our virgin pieces.
Can I restyle my wig? Yes! Because it’s real human hair, you can cut, curl, straighten, and restyle it just like your own. For any bigger changes, I’d recommend a stylist who knows wigs.
Do your wigs and toppers come with bangs? Not by default, but we can cut curtain, wispy, full, or face-framing bangs on request. You can also send us an inspiration photo and we’ll cut to that style for you. Just note that once a piece is cut, it becomes final sale.
Do you ship internationally? Yes, almost everywhere in the world. We’ll ship from our USA store or Australia store, with express, safe shipping.
What if my piece doesn’t feel right when it arrives? Reach out to us as soon as you can. As long as it’s unaltered, we’ll help you exchange it for the right one.
