The Goldylost guide to human hair toppers

A warm, plain-language guide to lace, silk, and grand toppers — what they are, who they suit, how they’re sized and worn, and what makes a Goldylost topper disappear into your own hair.

The basics

A hair topper is a partial piece of human hair that clips onto the hair you already have, to cover thinning or loss at your crown, your part, or your hairline. It’s the piece I reach for first with most women, because it works with your own hair rather than replacing it. We make ours in three families — lace, silk, and grand — all in 100% Remy human hair, hand-tied in our Sydney atelier, and designed to blend so seamlessly that no one can tell where your hair ends and the topper begins.

If your hair is thinning on top — at your part, your crown, or your hairline — I want you to know two things. You’re not alone, and you probably don’t need a full wig. Thinning like this is so common, whether it’s come from hormones, alopecia, a medical treatment, or simply age, and for most women the easiest option is a topper: a small, beautifully made piece of human hair that clips into the hair you already have, covers the thinning, and gives you back the volume you remember. This is the honest, plain-language guide I wish I’d had when I first went looking for a hair loss solution.

I’ve laid it out in clear sections you can read straight through, or simply dip into whenever you need to. Each of our three topper families — lace, silk, and grand — has its own section, with a short video to show you exactly what it looks like.

01What is a topper

Think of a topper a little like a hair extension, but for the top of your head. It clips onto your own hair to add volume and length, and to cover thinning or hair loss. Toppers are a wonderful first step if your hair is thinning, because they’re lightweight, look incredibly natural, and give you so many styling options.

Goldylost offers a few different types of hair topper to suit different needs, and all of them are made from our beautiful, fine-textured human hair.

02Who toppers suit

A topper is the right choice for most women whose thinning is on the top of the head — at the crown, the part, or the hairline — as long as there’s still healthy hair around the sides and back. That surrounding hair matters, because it’s what the clips gently hold onto. If there’s very little hair left around the edges to clip into, a wig is usually the more practical and secure choice.

If you’re not sure whether a topper is right for you, send us a few photos and a little about what you’re noticing in a consultation. We don’t need a diagnosis — just a picture of what you’re working with, and we’ll point you in the right direction.

03Lace toppers

Our lace topper is the flattest topper there is, built on a fine Swiss lace base that sits beautifully close to your scalp and lets it breathe. It’s also our most breathable topper, which our clients in the Australian and Florida heat especially love.

The top is made from a thin lace with the hairs hand-tied into it, so you can part it anywhere you like. And because the lace is so fine, this is the easiest topper to wear if you have a thin hairline — you don’t need to blend your own hair at the front if you don’t want to. The standard base is 8′′ × 8′′, which covers the crown and most of the top of your head generously.

04Silk toppers

Our silk topper is the most realistic topper there is. It’s made with a fine, skin-like silk top that mimics your own scalp, so when you part the hair you see what looks like skin with hair growing from it — not a base. It’s the one to choose when you want the part itself to look completely real, up close and in any light.

It’s also our fullest and most hard-wearing topper, which makes it a gorgeous everyday piece that lasts. And if you’d love a fringe, the silk top is the best base for bangs, giving them a natural-looking place to fall from.

The trade-off is that the silk base is a little thicker, so it doesn’t work as well for thin hairlines — you need some hairline of your own to blend it at the front. It also gives a fuller look, and some women prefer the lighter feel of the lace topper. The standard base is 8′′ × 8′′, covering the crown and the top of your head generously.

05Grand toppers

A grand topper is simply our biggest topper. It has a much larger base than our standard lace and silk toppers, so it covers far more of your head while still clipping into your own hair the same easy, glue-free way every topper does.

The big advantage over our other toppers is the lace front. It gives you a natural-looking hairline of its own, so unlike a standard topper, you don’t have to blend your own hairline at the front.

This is the one I suggest when thinning has spread beyond the crown and a standard topper no longer covers quite enough, but you’re not ready for a full wig. It really gives you the best of both — close to the coverage of a wig, with the simplicity and comfort of a topper.

One thing to keep in mind: because it’s larger, a grand topper still needs healthy hair around the edges for the clips to hold onto. If there’s very little hair left at your sides and back, a wig will usually be the more secure and comfortable choice — and we’ll always tell you honestly in a consultation if that’s the case.

06Virgin hair toppers

Our virgin hair toppers are the rarest pieces we make — entirely ultra-fine virgin hair that has never been colored or chemically treated. We source it directly from Southern Brazil, from women of European heritage, and it has a silky, featherlight texture that’s almost impossible to find on the human hair market. That delicate texture is exactly what lets a topper blend so seamlessly and feel like it’s growing from your own scalp — it’s the closest thing there is to the hair you were born with.

Because hair this fine is so hard to find, virgin hair is never a permanent collection. We can only ever work with the small amount we’re able to hand-select, so each piece is a limited, one-of-a-kind release — and when one goes up on the site, it usually sells within days.

07Color and length matching

A topper should be a similar color and length to your own hair — but the good news is it doesn’t have to be exact. You can usually go a few shades lighter or darker, and a few inches longer, and still get a beautiful, natural blend.

The one thing worth matching closely is your root color, where the topper meets your own hair, as this is where the hair blends. The ends have far more freedom — they can be lighter for that sun-kissed look, and you can even go a few inches longer for some extra length. Just don’t go drastically longer, or a completely different color, or it won’t look very natural. And if you’d like a hand, our team color-matches every piece in your consultation, and can add a shadow root, balayage, or full custom color through our atelier.

08Fit, clips, and the hair underneath

Every Goldylost topper is made with pressure-sensitive clips placed throughout the underside of the base, plus two combs at the front to prevent pulling on this more fragile area. The clips grip onto your own hair without pulling, and the topper holds securely all day. No glue, no tape. Our larger bases are designed to mold over the shape of your head and sit flat, clipping into the stronger areas rather than the fragile hair on top.

The single most important habit for any topper wearer is rotating clip placement. The clips themselves are gentle, but wearing them on exactly the same patch of hair every day for a year is not. Once every few weeks, shift the clips by half an inch to give the previous spots a rest. Done routinely, this prevents the most common form of topper-related damage — traction alopecia at the clip points.

If your perimeter hair is fine or sensitive, ask us about lighter clips and additional silicone strips. We can adjust either at the atelier.

09Care and lifespan

A human hair topper, like a piece of silk clothing, lasts roughly as long as the care you give it. Brush gently before and after wear. Wash every 10–20 wears with a sulfate-free shampoo. Air-dry on a wig stand. Store on a stand or flat in a silk bag, out of direct sun.

Properly cared for, a Goldylost topper lasts 1–2 years of regular wear. A lace topper is much more delicate, as the lace is so thin — that’s what people love about it, but it won’t last as long as a silk topper. Rotating between two pieces extends each one. And whenever your piece needs a little love, you can send it back to our atelier for a professional refresh — a deep wash, a re-tone of the color, and a re-cut where it’s needed — to bring a beloved topper back to life.

The full care reference is in our wash and care article.

“Choosing a topper is personal. The goal is not to look like you have more hair; it is to look like you, on a good day.” — Clementine, Goldylost

10Frequently asked questions

These are the questions we are asked most often. If yours isn’t here, send it to us — this section grows from real conversations.

Will a topper damage my own hair? When worn correctly, a hair topper will not damage your own hair. We’ve designed our toppers specifically with the health of your natural hair in mind. Our pressure-sensitive clips are made to hold securely without pulling, snagging, or stressing the hair shaft, and our cap is lightweight and breathable, so there’s no heavy weight dragging on your scalp. Where possible, we recommend our larger base toppers, as they clip into the stronger, healthier hair around the sides of your head rather than the more fragile thinning areas on top — protecting the hair that needs it most.

What size topper am I? Unlike a wig, you don’t need to measure your head — a topper simply clips onto the hair you already have. What you’re really choosing is how much coverage you need and which type suits you. Send us a photo of your thinning and we’ll help you pick.

Can I style it with heat? Yes. Because it’s real human hair, you can use your hot tools just like you would on your own hair. Our pieces air-dry straight and take heat styling well. As with your own hair, use a heat protectant and keep the temperature moderate to keep it looking beautiful for as long as possible. You can blow-dry it, but we don’t recommend a blow-out with a round brush (if you take it to your hairdresser, make sure they know this too!). Pulling with a round brush will break the knots on your lace top over time and cause shedding.

Can I color it? Because it’s human hair, it can technically be colored — but we always recommend caution here. Coloring is permanent, it can’t be undone, and getting it wrong can shorten the life of a piece you’ve invested in. If you want to adjust the color, please have it done by a professional experienced with wigs and toppers, and ideally talk to us first. We never recommend bleaching any of the colored pieces. Often the better path is choosing the right color from the start, which we’re happy to help you with.

Can I change the part or have bangs? Yes. The top is 100% hand-tied and multi-directional, so you can part the hair wherever you like — including a side part, which makes a big difference to how natural it looks. Bangs aren’t included by default, but on request we can cut curtain, wispy, full, or face-framing bangs — just send an inspo photo and we’ll cut to that style (note: once cut, the piece is final sale). Your piece arrives styled as shown in the product image; choose the restyle option on the product page and we’ll restyle it before shipping. And because it’s human hair, you can always restyle it at home with heat tools whenever you like.

What’s the difference between the lace, silk, and grand topper? All three are designed to add coverage, volume, and length where you need it most — the difference comes down to the base. The silk topper and lace topper have exactly the same base size and design; the difference is the material at the part. The silk topper uses a silk material that looks remarkably like skin, for a beautifully clean, scalp-like finish, while the lace topper uses a fine lace that sits very flat against the head — the better choice if you want less hair on your topper or have a thinner hairline. The grand topper is a hybrid between a topper and a wig: it has a much larger base and includes a lace front, giving you more coverage across the top and a natural hairline. It’s perfect for women who no longer have a hairline of their own to work with, or who want significantly more coverage without committing to a full wig.

Can I sleep in my topper? Best not to. Sleeping in it puts stress on the clips and shortens its life, and it can pull on your own hair and damage it overnight. Pop it off at night and store it on a stand, and both your topper and your own hair will stay beautiful for much longer.

Can I swim in my topper? I wouldn’t recommend it — chlorine and salt water are hard on the hair, and the clips aren’t made for water. Wet hair is also more fragile, so wearing your topper clipped in while swimming can lead to breakage of your own hair. If you swim often, a hat wig or a wig may suit you better.

Can I wear it in a ponytail or updo? Yes — and this is one of the most beautiful things about a well-made topper. Low ponytails, half-up styles, and soft buns all work beautifully.

How long does a custom topper take? Most of our toppers are made ahead and kept in stock, so they ship within a few business days. A custom or made-to-order piece can take up to twelve weeks, and a pre-order — reserving one that’s already being made — is usually quicker.

What if my topper isn’t right when it arrives? For a refund, contact us within 72 hours of receiving it and send it back unaltered — a restock fee applies. If you’d rather swap, you have 10 days to return it unaltered for a full store credit. Altered and custom pieces are final sale. Full details are in our returns policy.
