Education — Understanding Wig Density

Wig density explained: how to choose a natural-looking density

Density is the most overlooked choice in buying a wig — and the one that most decides whether it looks real. Here's how we think about it at Goldylost, and how to find the right density for you.

Goldylost — natural density human hair wig

Density is the choice almost nobody asks about, and the one that quietly decides whether your wig looks like a wig. I can usually spot a mass-market piece from across a room, and nine times out of ten it isn't the color or the cut that gives it away — it's the density. Too much hair, sitting too thick and too high, and the eye reads "wig" before it reads anything else. Get the density right, and everything else has room to look real. This is how we think about density at Goldylost, and how to choose the right one for you.

What density actually means

Density is simply how much hair is sewn into the cap — how thick or thin the wig is — written as a percentage. A higher number means more hair. That's the whole idea. The tricky part is that there's no industry standard behind the number, so one company's 130% can look like another's 150%. I've seen wigs labeled 200% that had thin, ratty ends, and pieces labeled 110% that looked beautifully full. Treat the percentage as a starting point, not a promise.

Why more is not better

It feels natural to want more hair, especially if you've been losing yours. But on a wig, more hair is usually the thing that gives it away. Mass-market wigs often run 150% to 180%, because it photographs dramatically and feels like value for money. On a real person, in real light, it reads as costume within minutes — too thick at the root, too heavy at the ends, sitting away from the scalp instead of falling against it.

A real head of healthy hair is finer than most people think. When we build a piece to match that, it stops competing for attention and simply looks like your hair. That's always the goal.

The Goldylost density range

Our wigs sit between 110% and 130% — the density of a natural, healthy head of hair. It's the range that lets a piece disappear into your daily life instead of announcing itself. We can make a fuller 150% by request, but it's the exception, not the standard.

How to choose your density

A few things guide the choice, and we walk through all of them in a consultation.

Your own hair. If you have naturally fine hair, a high-density wig will never quite look like "you." Matching your own density is what makes a piece believable to the people who see you every day.

Your build and features. Petite women and fine features usually suit a lighter density. It's the difference between hair that frames a face and hair that overwhelms it.

Your age. Hair naturally thins a little over the years, so a lighter density often reads as more believable on mature clients — and more like the hair you actually remember having.

Your lifestyle. A lighter piece is cooler and more comfortable for everyday wear. That matters more than people expect, especially through a long day or in a warm climate.

Density at the hairline

Here's a detail that matters as much as the overall number: density should be lighter at the very front. A real hairline is wispy and a little irregular — it doesn't start thick. Our lace fronts are built with lower density right at the edge, with lightly bleached knots, so the hair looks like it's growing out of your skin rather than planted in a line. It's a small thing that does an enormous amount of the work.

Cap construction and density

Density isn't the only thing that decides how full a piece feels — the way the cap is built matters just as much. We make our wigs in two cap constructions, and they wear quite differently even at the same density.

Lace top. A hand-tied Swiss lace front and lace top, with stretchy wefts at the back. It's our most popular cap — light, breathable, natural at the part, and the right place to start for almost every first-time client.

Fully hand-tied. The entire cap is hand-tied, knot by knot, with no wefts anywhere. Because of the way it's built, a fully hand-tied piece feels like a lighter density than a lace top at the very same percentage — not because there's less hair, but because the construction lets the hair sit softer and closer to your head. It's the most comfortable cap we make, and the one with the most styling freedom.

“The eye notices density before it notices anything else. Get it right, and the wig simply disappears.”— Clementine, Goldylost

Density FAQ

Can I add density to a wig later? Not easily — adding hand-tied hair to a finished cap is limited, fiddly work, so it's far better to choose the right density from the start. We can, however, repair and refill thinning areas over the life of a piece.

Does a higher density last longer? Slightly. Every piece sheds a little hair over time, so a wig that starts with more density has more hair to lose before it begins to look thin — which can give it a touch more life that way. That said, lifespan still comes down mostly to care: a well-looked-after piece lasts around one to two years of regular wear, and longer if you rotate two.

Will a lower density look thin or see-through? Not when it's done right. 110% to 130% is the density of healthy natural hair: full where it counts, and natural at the hairline, which is exactly the point.

Can you make a density lower than 110%? We don't recommend it. Below 110% you run the risk of the cap showing through, and as the piece naturally sheds a little hair over time, the cap starts to show very quickly.

I want more body — what should I do? Ask us about a 150% build, or simply style for volume. A light blow-dry at the root adds body without the permanence of extra density.

Does density affect comfort? Yes. Less hair means a lighter, cooler, more breathable piece — a real consideration for daily wear, and especially in the heat.

Not Sure Which Density Is Right for You?

You don't have to guess. Density is one of the first things we talk through in a consultation, and it's much easier to feel it in person, or see it on a video call, than to picture it from a number.
